Choosing the Right Pottery Bat

Pottery bats are available in different materials, sizes and styles, and the best choice depends on your pottery wheel, clay body and throwing preferences. Plastic bats are durable and resistant to water, while masonite and other fiberboard bats can provide useful moisture absorption as clay dries. Specialty bats and plaster-style bats can offer additional benefits for potters who want different drying or clay-release characteristics.

Pottery Bat Systems & Inserts

A pottery bat system allows potters to quickly change throwing surfaces while keeping pieces supported on their individual bats. Bat inserts are especially useful when throwing multiple pieces because a finished piece can be moved to a ware board or drying area while another bat is placed on the wheel. GlazeQueen also carries bat pins and replacement components for compatible pottery wheel bat systems.

Pottery Bat Size & Compatibility

Before purchasing a pottery bat, check the diameter of your pottery wheel head and the spacing of its bat-pin holes. Many pottery wheels use bat pins with a standard spacing, but dimensions can vary between wheel models. For example, GlazeQueen's North Star 13-inch bat system includes a 13-inch bat with inserts and is designed as a complete removable bat system.

If you are replacing an existing bat, match the new bat to your wheel's pin spacing and choose a size that provides enough working area for the forms you normally throw.
